What the journey is like
Two and three quarter hours: two of them straight motorway across the Empordà, and the last forty minutes a mountain road. Cadaqués sits behind the Rodes range and is reached only over a winding pass — which is exactly why the village still is what it was.
The car matters more on this route than on any other in our list. The road from Roses to Cadaqués strings together tight bends for fifteen kilometres; with a chauffeur who knows it, the drive stays smooth — and anyone prone to motion sickness is glad to sit in front with the windows cracked on that stretch.
Areas you travel through
The Empordà corridor
The AP-7 climbs the plain between Girona and Figueres, the Pyrenees on the horizon to the left. It is the long, dull part of the trip — and the part that passes without you noticing.
Figueres and the Alt Empordà
You leave the motorway at Figueres, home of the Dalí Theatre-Museum. From here the landscape changes: vineyards, olive groves and the tramuntana, the north wind that really does blow here.
Cap de Creus
The final stretch crosses the natural park: folded slate rock, terraced vines, not a house in sight. This is the landscape Dalí painted again and again, and seeing it explains why.
What to see when you arrive
Dalí House-Museum, Portlligat
The house where he lived and worked for forty years, a kilometre from Cadaqués. Entry is in groups of eight at a fixed time, so book well ahead.
The old town and Santa Maria
Cobbled lanes and white houses climbing to the church, which holds a Baroque altarpiece far too grand for a village of two thousand. The view from the porch is worth the climb.
Cap de Creus natural park
The easternmost point of the Iberian peninsula. A lighthouse at the end of the road and cliff paths around it; at dawn this is where the sun first touches Spain.
Dalí Theatre-Museum, Figueres
It is on the way, forty minutes from Cadaqués. With time to spare you can stop on the way in: tell us when booking and we build it into the route.
Before you travel
Parking in Cadaqués is very limited and the centre is pedestrian in summer. Arriving with a chauffeur removes the problem entirely: you are dropped in the village and that is that.
The tramuntana can blow hard for several days on end, especially October to March. It does not close the road, but it is worth knowing if you plan on the beach.
This is the longest route on our Catalan list: nearly three hours. It is worth going straight from the airport rather than breaking the trip in Barcelona.
